Your bed may feel as comfortable as ever before, but what if you start to feel some dental discomfort creep up? Not only can it be a bit worrying, but it can keep you up! While you should call your emergency dentist in the morning, here is what to do if you have a toothache during bedtime using four things you may already have.

1.) Prop Your Head Up with an Extra Pillow

Did you know that when you lie down, your blood pressure rises? It happens naturally because your heart can more easily pump it around your body. Since it doesn’t have to fight gravity, the extra pressure can make your toothache hurt a little more. To help alleviate it, you can try sleeping with an extra pillow.

2.) Redo Your Dental Hygiene Routine

If you had a nighttime snack, then it may just be a stuck morsel in your teeth! There are some instances where brushing can be helpful, but you should also floss. Getting in between your pearly whites can dislodge any piece that’s causing issues. If you are having trouble getting it out, then you can tie a knot in your floss to make it a bit thicker to pop the food out of place.

3.) Swish Around Warm Salt Water

In some cases, your toothache may be paired with some inflammation. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water might be helpful. It can help remove any debris while also clearing out harmful bacteria. Simply add a tablespoon of salt to a glass of warm water and use it as mouthwash!

4.) Take an Over-the-Counter Medication

Sometimes, all it takes is some pain relievers to give you temporary relief. They can lessen your dental discomfort for long enough until you sleep. Ibuprofen (such as Motrin or Advil) and acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) are some options that can be used for more than just headaches! Be sure to follow the directions listed on the label.

What To Do in the Morning

With all that being said, it’s important to remember that these are not permanent solutions to your toothache. They help lessen the pain in the meantime, but they do not address the main issue. Calling your dentist in the morning can help you get a schedule to find the root problem. After getting the treatment you need, you will be on your way toward restful nights once again.

About the Practice

At Bristol Family Dental, you benefit from a friendly team of dentists who are here to give the community the best care they deserve.
