How Does Dental Insurance Work?

In order to better understand how your dental insurance works, it’s important to know a few key terms that your insurance company and our office will regularly refer to:

  • Deductible: Your deductible is a set amount of money that your dental insurance company will have you pay before your benefits kick-in. Usually, this amount averages between $25 and $50, and it doesn’t apply to your annual preventive checkups and cleanings.
  • Maximum: Your maximum is the capped-off amount that your dental insurance company will pay out for your insurance claims over the course of a year. Once you hit this amount, you’ll be required to cover any costs that exceed it.
  • PPO: “PPO” stands for “Preferred Provider Organization,” which means that you can choose any dental office you want to go to, whether it’s in- or out-of-network. However, you’ll receive additional discounts when you see an in-network provider.

What’s the Difference Between Medical & Dental Insurance?

Many patients think that dental insurance plans work similarly to medical insurance plans, but that’s actually not the case at all. Dental insurance coverage is more stringent and focused on prevention over offering coverage for any treatment you need. For example, dental insurance companies cover 100 percent of the cost of routine checkups and cleanings, while typically only covering about 50 percent of the cost of more complex treatments, like root canals, dental crowns, etc. Because of this, you can save the most from out-of-pocket expenses by taking a preventive approach to caring for your smile and keeping up with your regular professional cleanings.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network Coverage

At Bristol Family Dental, we’re proud to be in-network with several major PPO dental insurance plans, including Anthem, Cigna, Delta Dental, and more! This means that we’re contracted with these plans to offer the lowest rates to our patients with these plans. Even if you’re not in-network with our office though, our team will happily file claims on your behalf and maximize your benefits, allowing you to see a team you trust without having to sacrifice savings!
